Libreville, Gabon – Gabon has confirmed its first case of mpox, the health ministry announced on Friday. The patient, a 30-year-old man, tested positive after returning from Uganda and exhibiting symptoms such as fever and skin lesions.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a global public health emergency due to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the emergence of a new, more transmissible variant, clade Ib.
Gabon’s health ministry has not specified which variant of the mpox virus was detected in the confirmed case.
