Ondo, Nigeria – Young health advocates have launched a campaign at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo, to raise awareness around HIV prevention and encourage strict adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). The outreach took place in collaboration with medical staff from the Ondo State General Hospital.
Spearheaded by Dr. Morayo Adediran and Dr. Mojirayo Ibukunoluwa, the initiative brought together dozens of young participants to engage in candid conversations about the ABCs of HIV prevention—Abstinence, Being faithful, and Condom use. Attendees also explored how ART improves the health and life expectancy of individuals living with HIV.

The event offered a rare opportunity for young people to interact directly with healthcare professionals, ask questions, and dispel myths surrounding HIV transmission and treatment. According to the organizers, the ultimate goal is to reduce new infections by empowering young people with accurate information and supportive tools.
During the session, facilitators stressed the life-saving benefits of ART and its role in achieving viral suppression. Participants were also reminded that consistent use of the therapy significantly lowers the risk of HIV transmission and enhances quality of life.
“By educating ourselves and others, we can create a more informed and supportive community for people living with HIV,” said one of the advocates during the program.
The awareness campaign attracted widespread attention and sparked meaningful discussions among youth, healthcare providers, and advocates. Organizers say plans are already underway to extend the campaign’s reach through future events, particularly targeting more youth across the state.
