Uganda has officially ended its latest Ebola outbreak, which began three months ago in the capital, Kampala. The health ministry announced the conclusion of the Sudan strain outbreak on April 26, after 42 days without any new confirmed cases.
The outbreak, which was first identified on January 30 following the death of a male nurse, caused concern across the country. The ministry’s announcement followed the recovery and discharge of the last confirmed patient. While the total number of cases and deaths was not updated in the latest announcement, earlier reports indicated at least ten cases and two deaths.
This marks Uganda’s ninth Ebola outbreak since 2000. The country’s tropical forests, which harbor the virus, make it particularly vulnerable. The Sudan strain, which triggered this outbreak, has no approved vaccine, complicating efforts to control its spread. Despite the challenges, Uganda’s experience in managing such outbreaks has been pivotal in quickly bringing the situation under control.
