Nigeria’s Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal has upheld a $220 million fine against Meta Platforms for breaching the country’s consumer, data protection, and privacy regulations. The decision came after Meta’s appeal to overturn the penalty was rejected.
The fine was originally imposed last July by Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). It was a result of Meta’s discriminatory practices, which put Nigerian consumers at a disadvantage compared to users in other countries with similar laws.
