Tokyo – Japan has placed seven African countries on alert due to the ongoing mpox outbreak. The Foreign Ministry issued a level-one advisory on Thursday, urging citizens to exercise caution when traveling to or residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.
The move follows the World Health Organization’s declaration of a public health emergency of international concern over the recent surge in mpox cases, primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Japan’s alert system is a four-tier scale, with level one being the lowest. While the government is advising vigilance, the advisory does not impose travel restrictions.
