A gripping new crime drama, “The Nigerian Mafia Johannesburg,” by Onyeka Nwelue exposes the violent and treacherous world of Johannesburg’s criminal underworld. The story kicks off with a tense exchange between a hitman, newly arrived from São Paulo, and a Chinese mobster negotiating a hit in the local currency, rands.
The mobster offers a meager sum, highlighting the grim economic realities of the underworld. Reluctantly, the hitman agrees to a deal for 45,000 rands, sealed with a limp handshake. A folded newspaper conceals a brown envelope, containing details and an advance payment for the job.
As night falls, the mobster, a seemingly insignificant figure, warns the hitman to stay vigilant before disappearing into the crowd, underscoring the deceptive nature of appearances in the criminal world.
The target is Pastor Tim Cletus, a Pentecostal preacher. The hitman, Uche Mbadiwe, is immediately put off by the pastor’s permed hair and affected demeanor. Visiting the pastor’s rundown church, Uche observes him in a grey three-piece suit, conversing with a destitute man.
Pastor Tim warmly greets Uche, recognizing him as a fellow Nigerian. He offers assistance with residency papers and visas, revealing his involvement in a visa racket. Criticizing the Chinese for their high fees and lack of understanding, the pastor pitches his services as more affordable and efficient.
The conversation takes a dark turn when Uche reveals a knife. Despite the pastor’s attempt to defend himself with a concealed revolver, Uche swiftly overpowers him. The struggle ends with a fatal slash to the pastor’s throat, followed by a final stab to the heart.
Pastor Tim’s lifeless body lies on the church floor, a stark reminder of the brutal realities of the criminal world. Uche takes the pastor’s gun, marking the beginning of his new life in South Africa.
