Seoul, South Korea – June 4, 2024 – Zambia called for a new era of cooperation between Africa and South Korea at the inaugural Korea-Africa Summit held in Seoul today. Representing President Hakainde Hichilema, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe praised Korea’s longstanding support for Africa’s development, particularly in infrastructure, agriculture, technology, and security.
Haimbe welcomed Korea’s pledge of $10 billion in development assistance and $14 billion in export financing, highlighting Africa’s desire for “mutually beneficial partnerships.” He emphasized the importance of adding value to Africa’s raw materials within the continent, mirroring strategies that fueled Korea’s own economic rise.
Climate change and its impact on sustainable development were a key focus for Haimbe. He called for collaboration on projects like irrigation, dams, and renewable energy to address food and energy insecurity in Zambia and across Africa. He also pointed to the energy crisis in Southern Africa, proposing a regional power grid connecting Zambia to countries with surplus electricity.
Beyond economic cooperation, Haimbe underscored Zambia’s commitment to regional peace and security, echoing the Summit’s theme of “Shared Growth, Sustainability and Solidarity.” He stressed the interconnectedness of global security, stating, “Instability Anywhere is Instability Everywhere.”
The two-day Korea-Africa Summit, held from June 4th to 5th, brings together African leaders to discuss a future of collaboration on critical issues facing both continents. The Summit follows a preparatory meeting of Foreign Ministers held on June 2nd.
