The future of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was the central topic of a meeting between Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, and Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama. The discussions, held on February 26, 2025, at Jubilee House in Accra, focused on the pressing challenges and future opportunities for ECOWAS.
Among the key issues raised was the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali from the organization. Dr. Touray provided details on the contingency measures being implemented to address the situation and ensure the continuity of ECOWAS’ goals. Additionally, the leaders spoke about the upcoming 50th anniversary of ECOWAS and preparations for a Special Summit focused on the future of the region.
Dr. Touray reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting member states in the areas of governance, economic integration, and security. He also took the opportunity to congratulate President Mahama on his recent election victory.
President Mahama expressed Ghana’s full support for ECOWAS and urged ongoing dialogue with the three countries that had withdrawn to promote regional peace and stability. He also showed his backing for the ECOWAS anniversary celebrations and the forthcoming summit, stressing the importance of repositioning the organization in light of current geopolitical shifts.
