RwandAir has rerouted its flights after the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) closed its airspace to Rwandan-registered aircraft. The airline announced the change on Wednesday, February 12, stating that it is working to provide safe and efficient alternatives to minimize passenger inconvenience.
The suspension of flights to DRC followed an earlier decision in May 2022, after the Congolese government accused Rwanda of supporting M23 rebels. Rwanda has denied the allegations, arguing that the DRC is blaming it for its internal issues, including the persecution of Congolese Tutsi communities, whom the M23 rebels represent. Rwanda has also raised concerns about the DRC’s collaboration with the FDLR, a UN-sanctioned terrorist group responsible for the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
