Moses Vilakati Elected African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment
Moses Vilakati, Eswatini’s former Cabinet Minister, has been elected as the new Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (ARBE) at the African Union Commission. The election took place during the 46th Meeting of the Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Vilakati won with overwhelming support, securing a significant position on the continental stage.
Vilakati’s appointment is a major achievement for Eswatini, enhancing the country’s leadership role in Africa’s key developmental sectors. With extensive experience in agriculture and environmental conservation, Vilakati’s leadership is seen as a promising step towards advancing sustainable development across the continent.
Vilakati holds a Master’s degree in Agriculture (International Development) from California Polytechnic State University, USA, and a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from the University of Swaziland (now Eswatini). His career has included roles as Eswatini’s Minister of Agriculture in 2013, and later as Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs from 2018 to 2023. He has also served as Project Director and Agribusiness Development Manager at the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) and held positions as a Project Director and Lecturer at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA).
Vilakati’s election marks a significant moment for both Eswatini and Africa, positioning the country at the forefront of efforts to ensure food security, sustainable agriculture, and environmental protection across the continent.
