Macomia, Mozambique – Islamist militant attacks have forced hundreds of families to flee the Chai administrative post in Cabo Delgado province, seeking refuge in Macomia town. The displaced have been forced to abandon their homes and fields, which provide their primary source of sustenance.
Families from the villages of Litandacua, Nkoe, and Chai-sede, which have been targeted in recent attacks, began arriving in Macomia over the weekend. Some are staying with relatives, while others have sought shelter in government-run accommodation centers.
One source described the situation, stating, “On Sunday, we received three overcrowded cars, not to mention the people arriving on foot since Friday. These families fled Chai. The terrorists may want us all to gather here and die of hunger together.”
While previously registered displaced families have begun receiving humanitarian aid, the newly arrived families have not yet received any assistance.
