Lesotho and Ethiopia are negotiating a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) aimed at improving trade, aviation activity, and mobility between the two nations. The agreement, once signed, will also promote job creation and skills transfer in Lesotho.
The talks were confirmed by Lesotho’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, H.E. Ntšiuoa Sekete, following her meeting with Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority Director General, Mr. Getachew Mengistie, and Ethiopian Airlines officials on January 24, 2025, in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, operates a vast network connecting 141 international destinations, including 66 African cities, through its hub in Addis Ababa.
Ambassador Sekete noted that this initiative aligns with the Government of Lesotho’s efforts to revitalize the country’s aviation sector, as outlined during the 2022 national elections. Lesotho and Ethiopia have a history of cooperation in aviation, having signed a General Bilateral Cooperation Agreement in June 2012.
