Dr. Samuel Munzele Maimbo has officially launched his campaign for the presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB), with support from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). The election is set to take place during the AfDB Annual Meeting in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on May 29, 2025.

At the launch event in Lusaka, Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, conveyed gratitude on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema for the endorsement from SADC and COMESA. Haimbe emphasized that the endorsement marks a milestone for both Zambia and the two regional blocs, urging unity to bolster the AfDB’s efforts in driving Africa’s economic growth.

Haimbe also recognized the AfDB’s role in promoting sustainable development and praised Dr. Maimbo’s qualifications, noting his capability to address Africa’s financial needs. The Minister reiterated the Zambian government’s support for Dr. Maimbo’s candidacy as part of its commitment to advancing qualified Zambians in international positions.

Dr. Maimbo expressed his appreciation to the Zambian government, SADC, and COMESA for their endorsement. He framed his campaign as a mission to amplify Africa’s global voice and economic influence. Speaking about the continent’s potential, Dr. Maimbo pointed to its rich resources, intellectual capital, and experience, and called for more effective implementation of development initiatives.
