Accra, Ghana – January 27, 2025 – Ghana has strengthened its maritime capabilities with the commissioning of the Lill-May Didriksen Simulation Centre at the Naval Training Command in Nutekpor. The facility, named after Denmark’s first female naval officer, will enhance training for naval officers and maritime stakeholders.
The project was funded by the Government of Ghana and the Danish Ministry of Defence, with the simulator supplied by Finnish company Wärtsilä Voyage Limited. Developed in partnership with the Ghana Navy and the Danish Defence Attaché to Ghana, the centre provides realistic training scenarios without deploying ships from operational duties.

Denmark’s Deputy Chief of Navy, Commodore Bo Overgaard, said Denmark remains committed to maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. The region, a vital trade route, has faced piracy and security challenges, but joint efforts have reduced piracy incidents by 60% in the past five years.
The event was attended by Ms. Marieta Agyeiwaa Brew (Esq), Head of Legal Counsel of Ghana, who was the guest of honour, and Ghana’s Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu. Denmark’s Ambassador to Ghana, Tom Nørring, and Danish Special Representative for Maritime Security, Nicolai Ruge, were also present.

The next phase of the project will focus on training Ghanaian instructors and technicians in collaboration with the Danish Navy and Svendborg International Maritime Academy over the next two years.
