Blantyre, Malawi – Vice President Dr. Michael Bizwick Usi has condemned corruption in Malawi, calling it a “cancer” that is crippling the nation. Speaking at Mudi House in Blantyre, he addressed complaints from two German investors representing the Landt Foundation, who reported being asked for bribes by government officials.
The investors informed Dr. Usi that certain officials were demanding bribes for the foundation to implement its projects. The Vice President expressed frustration, labeling those responsible as unpatriotic. He also revealed that the investors were close to pulling out of Malawi due to these corrupt practices before his office stepped in.
“This is a cancer. It must be uprooted,” Dr. Usi said, emphasizing that such behavior was hindering the country’s progress.
Aaron Landt, CEO of the Landt Foundation, accused officials from the Blantyre City Assembly of not only demanding bribes but also requesting unjustified allowances. He shared an example of an official who stayed for two hours yet demanded allowances for two days.
The Landt Foundation has been involved in local projects, including building a school in Blantyre.
