Malawi and China have signed a K50 billion ($30 million) financing agreement to build a new Judicial Complex in Lilongwe. The agreement was finalized on Tuesday during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing.
Malawi’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Simplex Chithyola-Banda, signed on behalf of the government, calling it a major boost for the country’s infrastructure. The grant, worth 200 million Chinese yuan, will fund the construction of the modern complex, which will include courtrooms and office spaces. The facility will be located opposite Malawi’s Parliament Building.
Chithyola-Banda described the project as a “fitting gift” from China, revealed during a bilateral meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera. He said the Ministry of Finance would work swiftly with Chinese stakeholders to ensure the project’s timely start.
Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Long Zhou, who signed the agreement on behalf of China, said his government is committed to ensuring the project is completed.
