Tokyo, Japan – August 24, 2024 – Japan’s Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, hosted a working lunch with five female ministers from African countries at the TICAD Ministerial Meeting. The gathering aimed to discuss ways to enhance women’s leadership in peace, security, and economic development in Africa.

Minister Kamikawa emphasized the crucial role women play in addressing societal challenges and ensuring stability in Africa. She announced a new program to foster youth leadership in peacebuilding through the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

The African ministers expressed their countries’ deep understanding of the importance of women’s participation in governance and peace efforts. They shared their initiatives to promote women’s entrepreneurship, equal representation in government, and strengthen partnerships with Japan.

The working lunch provided a platform for open dialogue and collaboration on gender equality and women’s empowerment. The participants agreed to continue their efforts to advance these goals, both at the national and regional levels.
