Tokyo, Japan – Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa met with South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola on Thursday, August 23, to discuss bilateral relations and international cooperation.
The meeting, held in Tokyo, marked a significant milestone in the growing partnership between the two nations. Minister Kamikawa congratulated Minister Lamola on his appointment and expressed her hope for a fruitful collaboration. Minister Lamola reciprocated the sentiment, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to visit Japan and strengthen bilateral ties.
In terms of bilateral relations, Japan and South Africa reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in various fields, particularly in the power and energy sectors. Minister Kamikawa introduced Japan’s initiative to establish a network of officials dedicated to cross-border economic affairs, while Minister Lamola expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support for South Africa’s decarbonization efforts and encouraged Japanese companies to expand their operations in the country.
Both countries also discussed the importance of maintaining a free and open maritime order based on the rule of law. They agreed to explore areas of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, including freedom of navigation and the promotion of the blue economy.
On the international stage, Japan and South Africa emphasized the crucial role of the G20 in addressing global challenges. Minister Kamikawa expressed her hope for increased African representation in the G20 under South Africa’s presidency. Minister Lamola outlined his country’s priorities for its G20 presidency.
The meeting also covered other international issues, such as the United Nations Security Council reform, the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East, and the regional situation in East Asia, including the North Korean abduction crisis.
