Gabon has emerged as a frontrunner in efforts to improve air travel connectivity across Africa, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The endorsement came during a high-level meeting on July 17th between ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano and Gabon’s Transitional President, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. Discussions centered on the sustainable development of the aviation sector, with a particular focus on the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) initiative.
SAATM aims to create a unified air transport market within Africa, fostering economic growth and integration across the continent. President Sciacchitano commended Gabon’s leadership in supporting this initiative and its commitment to growing its own domestic aviation sector.
The ICAO pledged its support to Gabon through various means, including providing advanced training programs for aviation professionals and assisting with the development of a new airport in the capital city, Libreville. This collaboration comes on the heels of the recent Africa and Indian Ocean Aviation Week (AFIWEEK 2024) held in Libreville, further solidifying Gabon’s dedication to aviation advancement.
