South Africa gears up for a special Nelson Mandela International Day this year, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the country’s democracy. This July 18th, citizens are called upon to not only honor Madiba’s legacy but also actively contribute to building the nation envisioned in 1994.
The theme for this year’s Mandela Day is “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” urging South Africans to address social issues. The government encourages everyone to dedicate 67 minutes, mirroring Mandela’s 67 years of public service, to volunteer efforts within their communities.
Activities can range from organizing food drives to assisting at soup kitchens, embodying the spirit of Ubuntu – “a person is a person through other people.” The 2024 Mandela Day Walk and Run provides another avenue to participate, offering 5km, 10km, and 21km distances on July 20th.
This year’s Mandela Day holds additional significance as it falls on the same day as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Opening of Parliament Address. This national event outlines the priorities of the 7th Administration, emphasizing good governance and transparency. South Africans are encouraged to tune in and familiarize themselves with the address to understand the government’s direction.
