Africa football heavyweights, Morocco, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal and Nigeria have dropped in the latest world football governing body, FIFA latest ranking released on it’s website on Thursday. This is as result of their inactiveness in the past four weeks marked by continental competitions such as UEFA EURO and Copa América.
The Atlas Lions of Morocco dropped two spots in the ranking, now sitting in 14th place. As of June, the Moroccan national team held the 12th position. Despite the international slight dip, the North African team maintains its position as the best football team in Africa. The Teranga Lions of Senegal sit in the second position on the continent but slipped from 18th to 19th in the global ranking.
On the flip side, third ranked African side, the Pharaohs of Egypt who moved from 37th to 36th place in June’s FIFA rankings after securing a victory over Burkina Faso and a draw with Guinea-Bissau in the African 2026 World Cup qualifiers group stage, maintain the position in the rating. Recall that Egypt had previously achieved a spot in the world top 10 after winning three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles in 2006, 2008, and 2010.
Meanwhile, 2025 AFCON Champions, Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire and three time African champions, Super Eagles of Nigeria experienced slight drop in the July’s ranking. Cote d’Ivoire who are placed 4th in Africa dropped from 37th to 38th as 5th placed African team Nigeria slipped from 38th to 39th. Tunisia (41), Algeria (46), Cameroon (51), Mali (53), and South Africa (57) who gained two places complete the top 10 in Africa.

FIFA has announced that the next rankings would be published on 19 September 2024.
