Kampala, Uganda – Ugandan travelers and businesses rejoice! Uganda Airlines announced a significant expansion of its network on Wednesday, unveiling new flights to three key African destinations: Abuja, Lusaka, and Harare. This move marks a major step in the airline’s ambitious growth strategy and aims to solidify its position as a leading connector across the continent.
The new services kick off on September 12th, 2024, with flights to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. Passengers can expect convenient twice-weekly service, offering a valuable connection to a previously underserved region. This strategic addition complements the existing Lagos route, catering to a wider Nigerian audience.
Following closely behind, Lusaka, Zambia, and Harare, Zimbabwe, will be added to the map on September 25th. These routes will operate on a unique triangular pattern, offering four flights per week. Passengers can fly from Entebbe (Uganda) to either Lusaka or Harare, with a return leg connecting the other city before returning to Entebbe. This innovative approach optimizes efficiency and caters to traffic flow in both directions.
“This launch marks a crucial milestone in our journey,” said Ms. Jenifer Bamuturaki, CEO of Uganda Airlines. “It fulfills our three-year strategic plan and paves the way for the exciting next phase of our long-term vision.”
Beyond increased destinations, Uganda Airlines strategically targets underserved routes. The Abuja route, for example, aims to bridge the gap between East and West Africa, offering a more competitive alternative to the currently expensive options. This focus on neglected markets positions Uganda Airlines as a champion for affordable and accessible air travel across the continent.
The expansion goes beyond passenger convenience. By creating a robust regional network, Uganda Airlines aims to leverage these new routes as feeder services for its existing long-haul destinations like London, Mumbai, and Dubai. This not only benefits passengers with seamless connections but also optimizes fleet utilization and boosts overall profitability.
“We are driven by the vision of connecting Africa,” Ms. Bamuturaki emphasized. “These new routes represent a strategic investment in building a strong regional network that will not only serve our customers better but also solidify Uganda Airlines’ position as a key player in African aviation.”
