Beijing, China – Somalia has accused Ethiopia of undermining peace efforts in the Horn of Africa region, during a senior officials meeting held in Beijing.

Somali Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Mr. Hamza Adan Haadoow, delivered a speech at the Second Horn of Africa Peace Conference on June 24th. While expressing appreciation to China for hosting the event, Haadoow used the opportunity to criticize Ethiopia’s recent actions.

“We remain committed to promoting peace and stability in the region,” said Haadoow. However, he went on to highlight Somalia’s concerns over Ethiopia’s involvement with a northern region leader, calling a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) “illegal.”

Haadoow argued that such actions violate international law and contribute to regional instability. He further claimed that Ethiopian interventions in Somalia since 2007 have worsened the situation, allowing the militant group Al-Shabaab to gain strength.

“We need collective efforts to combat terrorism,” Haadoow emphasized. “This requires adherence to international law and respect for national sovereignty.”

Somalia urged increased regional economic cooperation, leveraging its strategic location and long coastline. Haadoow called for a united front against terrorism and external interference, stressing the importance of dialogue and collaboration to achieve lasting peace and prosperity in the Horn of Africa.
