The Democratic Alliance (DA) will not support a motion of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa, adhering to an agreement with the African National Congress (ANC). This decision follows the formation of a coalition government after the ANC’s poor performance in the May 29 elections.
Helen Zille, DA Federal Council Chairperson, confirmed the party’s stance during a conversation with Clement Manyathela. Zille stated that the DA would only consider supporting impeachment if compelling evidence of criminal wrongdoing emerged, specifically referencing the Phala Phala scandal. However, she emphasized that the party is committed to addressing such issues within the framework of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
“We will only support impeachment if the evidence suggests it is warranted, but given that we have signed a statement of intent, we are not in a position to start impeaching a president we just voted for,” said Zille.
Zille elaborated that the agreement with the ANC includes a commitment to not destabilize the government. “We haven’t ruled out taking action in the future, but we will not support a motion of no confidence in the president as part of our current agreement.”
She added, “We cannot be held hostage. We voted for Cyril Ramaphosa and have agreed not to destabilize the government by constantly voting no confidence in each other.”
