The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) in the Northern Cape secured a potential win for the Afrikaner town of Orania after kingmaker support for Zamani Saul’s re-election as Premier.
The FF+ threw their weight behind the ANC candidate in exchange for the provincial government’s consideration of Orania’s status. This could lead to official recognition of the Afrikaner nationalist town.

Located along the Orange River, Orania has long been a symbol of self-determination for Afrikaners seeking to preserve their cultural heritage. The agreement between the FF+ and the ANC paves the way for a formal recognition of the community’s right to exist.
“This is a historic moment,” said Theo Joubert, FF+ member of the Provincial Legislature. “By recognizing Orania, the government acknowledges the right of such communities to exist.”
Joubert further highlighted the potential for Orania to serve as a model for other communities in the Northern Cape. A working team established by the province will reportedly liaise with Orania to explore this possibility.
