Johannesburg, South Africa – The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is throwing its full weight behind Mubita Nawa’s candidacy for Secretary General of INTERPOL. Nawa, currently Director of Administration in the Zambia Police Service, is one of four contenders vying for the prestigious role, which oversees the world’s largest international police organization.
SADC leaders officially endorsed Nawa’s bid in August 2023, highlighting his extensive experience in combating transnational crime, dedication to justice, and strong leadership qualities. Professor Kula Ishmael Theletsane, Director of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Affairs, expressed confidence that Nawa would not only bolster INTERPOL’s effectiveness but also forge stronger partnerships among member countries.
Nawa’s career in law enforcement, unwavering commitment to international cooperation, and forward-thinking approach to global security are seen as key assets. He champions leveraging technology and innovative practices to modernize INTERPOL, enhancing its agility in the face of evolving threats.
“We urge all member states to back his candidacy,” said Professor Theletsane. “Now is the time for Africa to take its rightful place on the global stage. By endorsing Mr. Nawa, we believe his leadership will create a more secure, interconnected, and resilient world community.”
The current Secretary General, Jürgen Stock, will complete his second term in November 2024 at the 92nd General Assembly in Glasgow, UK.
