Johannesburg gears up to celebrate a quarter-century of Africa’s premier jazz festival, the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz (SBJOJ). This year’s edition promises an unforgettable experience, brimming with phenomenal performances and a vibrant lifestyle experience, all set against the backdrop of Johannesburg’s Sandton Convention Centre on September 27th and 28th, 2024.

The festival boasts a stellar lineup featuring over 50 world-class musicians from more than 10 countries. Spread across five stages, the event offers a truly global perspective on jazz, showcasing the rich tapestry of the genre from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Bonga Sebesho, Group Head of Sponsorships at Standard Bank, highlighted the festival’s significance: “The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz has been the heart of our cultural commitment for years. This 25th anniversary promises to be a landmark occasion, reflecting our dedication to artistic expression, inclusivity, and growth.”

Curators have meticulously crafted a program featuring rising stars alongside jazz legends who have graced the SBJOJ stage in the past. Grammy Award-winning Chris Botti shares the spotlight with trumpet giants like UK-based Matthew Halsall and South Africa’s own Feya Faku. Up-and-coming trumpeter Darren English joins forces with virtuoso pianist Kenny Banks Jr. (USA), while the legendary Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés brings his 50-year career to the stage with his Royal Quartet.

The festival offers a diverse range of experiences across its stages. The CONGA STAGE features a unique Japan-South Africa collaboration between pianist Keiko Matsui and vocalist Nokukhanya Dlamini. Rising star Sibusiso Mashiloane showcases his latest project, while Mandisi Dyantyis returns with his captivating blend of roots and jazz. Audiences can also groove to the infectious sounds of the Trinidadian steelband Siparia Deltones and the global stylings of South African-Belgian vocalist Tutu Puoane. West African griot music takes center stage with the return of Fatoumata Diawara, who first performed at SBJOJ backing the legendary Oumou Sangare.

The DIPHALA STAGE presents a remarkable collaboration between the acclaimed vocalist Lizz Wright (USA) and South African guest artist Brenda Mtambo. Gifted vocalists and composers like Spha Mdlalose, Mimi Mtshali, and the Portuguese-South African trumpeter Jessica Pina promise a unique blend of influences. Drum enthusiasts can look forward to the Sven Rozier Group featuring Dutch trumpeter Ellister van der Molen, while young keyboard wizard Mpumi Dhlamini presents “Tribute of Note.”

The MBIRA STAGE honors the legacy of Oliver Mtukudzi with a special tribute featuring Samantha Mtukudzi (ZIM), Maduva Madima (SA), Yvonne Chaka Chaka (SA), and Mbeu (ZIM). Audiences can then embark on a captivating journey with Joe Nina Reframed collaborating with The South African Air Force Band. Lesotho-born songstress Maleh returns by popular demand, while the iconic Thandiswa Mazwai unveils her new project, Sankofa, alongside the Senegalese band that originally recorded the music.

South African music is well-represented with electrifying performances by MiCasa, Vusi Nova, Mafikizolo, and the powerful Iphupho L’ka Biko. Renowned poet Bongani Mbandla and legendary storyteller Gcina Mhlophe add another layer of artistic expression to the festival.

For those seeking an experimental edge, the LOUNGE STAGE offers a platform for innovative sounds. Groove Street presented by Lulo Café (SA), Black Love hosted by Just Themba SA, and the ever-evolving sounds of What Is Wrong With Grooving (DJ Kenhero, Nothemba Madumo & Tha Muzik) promise a truly unique experience.
