OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has a bold vision for the future of artificial intelligence: a super-competent AI assistant that seamlessly integrates into our lives, becoming an indispensable partner.

Altman describes this AI not as a tool we use for specific tasks, but as a “super-competent colleague” that can handle both simple and complex requests. Imagine an AI that remembers every email, conversation, and detail about your life, but doesn’t feel intrusive.

This vision goes beyond OpenAI’s current offerings like DALL-E and ChatGPT, which excel at generating creative text and visuals but lack the ability to learn from interactions.

The question remains: how will we interact with this powerful AI?

While smartphones are constantly evolving with AI features, Altman believes a dedicated device might not be necessary. This “killer app” for AI could potentially exist entirely in the cloud. However, he acknowledges the allure of new hardware, hinting at exciting developments in this area, though perhaps not spearheaded by him directly.

Another hurdle for powerful AI assistants is the ever-growing need for training data. Altman expresses optimism, suggesting alternative methods of training AI intelligence beyond simply requiring more data. He compares it to human learning, hinting that there might be another, more efficient path for AI development.

The race for artificial general intelligence (AGI) – AI that can reason like humans – is heating up. While Altman doesn’t believe brute computing power will be the sole determining factor, he acknowledges a certain threshold is necessary. Several companies are vying for AGI supremacy, and Altman suggests there might be different forms of AGI with varying strengths and weaknesses.

One question left hanging: when will we see the next iteration of GPT, OpenAI’s powerful language model? Altman keeps that under wraps, leaving us with a smile and a hint of future advancements.
