According to the Henley Passport Index, the Nigerian passport is among the least valuable to hold in 2023, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to only 46 countries. The Index, which is an authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa, is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The Nigerian passport ranked 97th out of 109 places. Other countries with less valuable passports include Eritrea, South Sudan, Iran, Congo, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Bangladesh, Kosovo, Libya, North Korea, Nepal, Palestinian Territory, Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The report also indicates that the Japanese passport offers the greatest global travel freedom with visa-free or visa-on-demand access to a record 193 destinations around the world, followed by Singapore and South Korea.
