Lagos State Government recently championed a new approach to talent management with the launch of “Breaking the Cycle: Talent Management in the New Normal” by Habiba Balogun and Bruce Pins. The Director-General, Office of Transformation, Creativity & Innovation, represented the Governor at the event.

The book launch highlighted the need for a shift from outdated practices to a merit-based system that recognizes and rewards individual skills and achievements. This, according to the Governor’s message, is crucial for fostering a culture of excellence and driving growth within government ministries.

Investing in continuous learning for its workforce was another key theme. Equipping employees with the necessary skills to navigate the ever-changing work environment is paramount in the “new normal,” the message emphasized.

The event also showcased Lagos’ commitment to fostering innovation within the civil service. “Growth mindset” initiatives and annual “ideas days” were mentioned as examples of programs that encourage creativity and recognize impactful contributions from public servants.

The Director-General concluded by reiterating the importance of modern talent management practices for both public and private organizations. Building strong and capable workforces, he stressed, requires a multi-pronged approach that prioritizes merit, continuous learning, diversity and inclusion, employee well-being, and leveraging technology.
