The U.S. Embassy in Eswatini celebrated a significant milestone as they launched the inaugural Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) program at the Manzini American Corner. A total of 20 exceptional young women from Eswatini were selected to participate in this remarkable initiative. Leading the program as facilitator and mentor is Claudia Castellanos, the Co-founder and CEO of Black Mamba Foods.
The AWE program aims to empower women by providing them with the knowledge, networks, and opportunities needed to establish and expand successful businesses. Recognizing the economic potential of young women and their crucial role in driving economic recovery and growth, the program goes beyond focusing solely on young people. Promoting women’s economic opportunities and breaking down barriers to women’s equality are key objectives of the program.
Deputy Chief of Mission Caitlin Piper highlighted the significance of the AWE program, stating, “This program enables us to take another step toward breaking down barriers to women’s equality.” Emphasizing the unique economic potential of young women, she emphasized the importance of equipping them with the capabilities and resources necessary to participate in the economy.
The AWE program, which has been implemented in nearly 100 countries since 2019, marks Eswatini’s first participation this year. The program is being run in collaboration with Lesotho and South Africa, further strengthening regional partnerships.
DCM Piper encouraged the participants to maximize the knowledge and networks they will acquire through the program, enabling them to launch and expand their businesses not only within Eswatini but also across international borders.
