Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A looming disaster is unfolding in northern Ethiopia as torrential rains continue to batter the Amhara region, putting an estimated 400,000 people at risk of flooding and landslides.

The regional disaster prevention commission has issued a dire warning, stating that 32 districts are facing heightened danger due to the relentless downpours. Commissioner Tesfaw Batable sounded the alarm, emphasizing the critical situation in areas like North Gondar, South Gondar, and Wag Hemra zones, which have a history of being ravaged by natural disasters.

While authorities are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact, the risk remains alarmingly high. The Ethiopian Meteorology Institute has issued landslide warnings, prompting local officials to remain on high alert.

Unfortunately, this rainy season has proven to be devastating for various parts of the country. Last month, a series of landslides in the Gofa zone of southern Ethiopia claimed nearly 260 lives and displaced over 15,000 people.
