Tokyo – Japan will host a high-level ministerial meeting on August 24 and 25 to lay the groundwork for the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), scheduled for Yokohama in August 2025.

The meeting, announced by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Tuesday, will bring together African ministers and international partners to discuss strategies for boosting ties between Japan and the continent.

Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko will hold bilateral talks with her African counterparts on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting, aiming to strengthen cooperation in various fields.

The gathering will feature discussions on youth inclusion, education, and healthcare, reflecting key priorities for Africa’s development. International organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank, and African Union Commission are also expected to participate.

A panel discussion on innovation in Africa and events focused on leveraging Japanese technology for universal health coverage are highlights of the ministerial agenda.

TICAD, initiated in 1993, has become a major platform for dialogue on Africa’s development. The conference, initially held every five years, shifted to a triennial cycle in 2016 with TICAD VI in Nairobi, Kenya.
