From Rural Roots to Renowned Artist: Mbayiwa’s Art Blossoms at Schütz

Pretoria, South Africa: Zimbabwean artist Lionel Tazvitya Mbayiwa embarks on a thrilling new chapter as he joins the prestigious “Artist in Residency” program at the Schütz Art Museum, announced by the Austrian Embassy in Pretoria. Mbayiwa, hailing from the rural landscapes of Zimbabwe, brings a fresh perspective to the art world, shaped not by formal training but by the guidance of his brother and the vibrant tapestry of his upbringing.

His artistic journey began with a debut group exhibition at Harare’s Delta Gallery, followed by showcases at prestigious institutions like the Zimbabwe National Gallery. In a captivating statement, Mbayiwa reveals the bedrock of his artistic vision: faith, culture, and a childhood nurtured by stories and fables in the absence of modern entertainment. This rich tapestry translates into his creative pursuits, encompassing painting, drawing, printing, and photography.

Mbayiwa’s works are imbued with symbolism. Animals dance across his canvases, not mere creatures but metaphors for the myths, beliefs, and cultural narratives woven into his personal story. His art poignantly delves into the challenges faced by black communities, particularly his own experience seeking refuge in a foreign land due to turmoil back home.

Technically, Mbayiwa’s approach is as captivating as his themes. He lays oil pastels as a foundation, then layers acrylics or oil paints, only to scrape away parts, revealing hidden lines beneath. This technique echoes the ancestral cave paintings of his heritage, connecting him to his past while unearthing the hidden truths and unspoken struggles of the black experience.
