A bold step toward a knowledge-driven economy unfolds today as South Africa launches its first National System of Innovation Transformation Summit. Bringing together key players from government, academia, business, and labour, the summit seeks to embed science, technology, and innovation at the core of national development.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Blade Nzimande, will lead discussions alongside Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who is set to open the event with a message of support. Nzimande will follow with a keynote address, outlining the government’s vision for a more inclusive and innovative future.
A major highlight of the summit is a high-profile panel discussion titled “Transforming Knowledge for South Africa’s Future,” chaired by former ministerial advisor Dr Derrick Swartz. The session will feature some of the country’s most distinguished academics, including Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand; Professor Azwinndini Muronga, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University; and Professor Shireen Motala, South African Research Chair for Teaching and Learning at the University of Johannesburg.
Discussions will focus on critical themes such as equity and diversity in research, the role of science and technology in green industrialisation, and strategies to involve young people in scientific and technological innovation. Complementing these talks, an interactive exhibition will showcase cutting-edge innovations, offering a glimpse into South Africa’s potential as a leader in global scientific progress.
Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Nomalungelo Gina, will deliver the closing remarks as the summit concludes its mission to redefine the nation’s approach to research, development, and industrial advancement.
