Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has returned from a one-day working visit to Côte d’Ivoire, where he met with Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara to discuss regional security, cocoa production, and illegal mining.
The talks focused on strengthening relations and addressing the role of the Alliance of Sahel States in West African security. President Ouattara acknowledged Mahama’s engagement with Sahel nations and its potential to facilitate their reintegration into ECOWAS.
Both leaders examined strategies to improve global cocoa pricing and value addition, recognizing that Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire collectively produce nearly 80% of the world’s cocoa.
They also addressed the impact of illegal mining, known as galamsey, on water bodies and the environment, stressing the need for collaborative efforts to mitigate its effects.
