KIGALI, March 4, 2025 – Rwanda has condemned Germany’s caretaker government for politicizing development cooperation, calling the decision counterproductive and damaging to regional peace efforts.
The Rwandan government accused Germany of undermining an African-led initiative to resolve the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Officials in Kigali argue that Berlin’s stance ignores violations committed by the DRC, emboldening its aggressive posture and prolonging hostilities.
Rwanda also criticized Germany for failing to acknowledge the threat posed by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a militia with alleged ties to the DRC government. Kigali maintains that the FDLR remains a danger to both Rwanda and Congolese Tutsi communities in eastern DRC.
The statement further pointed to Germany’s historical ties to the region’s instability, arguing that Berlin should avoid one-sided measures that fail to address the broader security threats. Despite the diplomatic rift, Rwanda reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national security and participating in regional peace efforts.
