Over 30 migrants, including two children, were rescued after being stranded for four days on a gas platform off Tunisia’s coast, Sea-Watch confirmed on March 4. The group had been abandoned without care after their dinghy, which they used to flee Libya, drifted away.
Sea-Watch’s fast ship, the Aurora, was dispatched from Lampedusa, Italy, to carry out the rescue. The migrants were located on the Miskar platform, with an empty rubber boat floating nearby.
Alarm Phone, a migrant helpline, reported that they had been in contact with the group on Sunday, who mentioned that one person had died, and others were unwell due to the cold conditions.
European governments have signed agreements with Tunisia and Libya to intercept and return migrants, despite ongoing human rights concerns.
