The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of Lesotho has reported significant diplomatic achievements during the 2024/2025 financial year. The Kingdom hosted key international figures and expanded its global presence through high-level visits and the establishment of new diplomatic ties.
This year, Their Majesties visited Bhutan, while His Majesty King Letsie III traveled to the United Kingdom, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. The Ministry also backed Mr. Joshua Setipa’s candidacy for Commonwealth Secretary-General.
Lesotho welcomed two major international leaders: President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane also visited Turkey and South Africa, strengthening bilateral relationships.
A significant milestone was the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Basotho Nation’s founding, attended by heads of state, UN officials, and representatives from FAO, IFAD, and WFP.
Diplomatic relations were further expanded with the establishment of formal ties with Bhutan, Grenada, and Vanuatu. The CEO of Nutrition International, Joel Spicer, visited Lesotho to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry signed and ratified 10 international agreements, facilitated 143 scholarships for Basotho, and sent 38 nationals abroad for capacity-building programs. Additionally, 13 Lesotho nationals are currently working in international organizations, including the UN, African Union, and FAO.
