The UN human rights office reported on Tuesday that three children were executed by M23 rebels in Bukavu, a city in eastern Congo. The children were reportedly killed after they put on weapons and uniforms left behind by the Congolese army when the M23 forces entered the city.
Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights office, confirmed the executions and expressed concern over a rise in violations since the rebels arrived in Bukavu last week. The office also raised alarms about the safety of journalists, human rights defenders, and civil society members who are at risk of reprisals from the M23.
