The National Science Week (ENSW) was launched by the Research Science Technology and Innovations Department under the Ministry of Information, Communications, and Technology. The event, themed “Igniting Curiosity, Inspiring Innovation: Science for Sustainable Economic Growth,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss science’s role in Eswatini’s economic development.
Attendees included Members of the ICT Portfolio Committee from both Houses of Parliament, South Africa’s Permanent Ambassador to UNESCO, Dr. Phil Mjwara, and Dr. Kofi Bampong, Technical Officer from the International Atomic Energy Agency (FAO-IAEA). Scientists and innovators from across the country joined discussions on transitioning Eswatini from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy.
The initiative follows King Mswati III’s call to strengthen research, science, and innovation for sustainable economic growth and improved livelihoods. As part of this effort, the Ministry of ICT will host regional events in all four regions to encourage curiosity and innovation among emaSwati.
Discussions focused on strategic investments in research, development, digital transformation, and capacity building. Experts examined how a strong innovation ecosystem can create economic opportunities, boost productivity, and enhance Eswatini’s competitiveness on regional and global platforms.
