Uganda has appointed Michael Atingi-Ego as the new Governor of the Central Bank and Augustus Nuwagaba as Deputy Governor, President Yoweri Museveni’s office confirmed on February 10.
Atingi-Ego, who had previously served in a senior role at the bank, returned in 2020 as Deputy Governor and has been acting as the head of the institution since the death of longtime Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile in 2022. Nuwagaba, an economics professor at Makerere University, has also worked at Uganda’s finance ministry and led the consultancy firm Reev Consult International.
The appointments are now awaiting approval from Uganda’s parliament, with their credentials set to be submitted for review.
