A deadly shooting at a school in Örebro, Sweden, on Tuesday left at least 10 people dead, marking the country’s deadliest mass shooting on record. The attack took place at the Risbergska Campus, a school for adult education, where a gunman opened fire. The suspect died at the scene, authorities confirmed.
Police said the shooter was not previously known to them and had no connections to any gangs. They also stated there was no evidence suggesting ideological motives behind the attack. The type of weapon used was not disclosed. Investigators believe the shooter acted alone, but further inquiries are underway at several locations in the city.
Roberto Eid Forest, the head of the local police district, described the incident as an “extremely tragic” event, with many people affected. “It’s a nightmare,” he said, reflecting on the horror of the attack.

Sweden’s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, condemned the shooting as “brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people,” calling it the worst mass shooting in the country’s history. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer also expressed his condolences, labeling the attack an “unspeakably sad tragedy.”
The attack occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time. Six victims were taken to the local university hospital, with five suffering from gunshot wounds. Some have undergone surgery, and four are now in stable condition. It remains unclear how many other people were injured. Police reported no officers were wounded during an exchange of gunfire with the suspect.
Eyewitnesses described hearing loud bangs and screams as the shooter moved through the campus. One student, Andreas Sundling, 28, sheltered in a classroom. “We heard three bangs and loud screams,” he said, waiting to be evacuated.
The Risbergska Campus serves adult students, including immigrants, offering courses ranging from elementary to high school level. Many students had left the campus after taking a national exam earlier in the day, minimizing the number of people on site at the time of the attack.
Authorities urged the public to avoid the area, while schools nearby were evacuated. Police continued their investigation, and although they believe the assailant acted alone, they have not ruled out the possibility of additional perpetrators.
