Benin is intensifying efforts to combat Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) through community-driven initiatives, with local health workers and volunteers leading awareness and treatment campaigns. Speak Up Africa, an organization focused on public health and sustainable development, has partnered with the Ministry of Health to support grassroots mobilization.
More than 300 community health agents in the Klouékanmè-Toviklin-Lalo (KTL) health zone took part in a gala football match, using sports to unite people and raise awareness about NTDs. Over 50 motorcycle taxi drivers participated in an awareness march, spreading information across markets, public spaces, and workplaces about the dangers and impact of these diseases.
A campaign featuring a special program on Atchakpodji radio showcased powerful visuals of NTDs’ effects, stressing the need for action. Rural women also engaged decision-makers through traditional songs and dances, urging household heads, local leaders, and community members to support mass drug administration (MDA) programs.
Benin has made progress in tackling NTDs. The country stopped mass treatments for lymphatic filariasis in 2020 and plans to submit an elimination dossier to the World Health Organization (WHO) by 2026. Benin previously eradicated Dracunculiasis in 2009, Human African Trypanosomiasis in 2020, and Trachoma in 2023.
