Prominent journalist and media freedom advocate Phathiswa Magopeni has been appointed Executive Director of the Press Council of South Africa (PCSA), taking over from Latiefa Mobara, who steps down after more than a decade of service.
PCSA Chair Judge Fritz Brand welcomed Magopeni’s appointment, describing her as an accomplished journalist with a strong track record. He acknowledged Mobara’s contributions, crediting her leadership for strengthening the Council’s reputation among media professionals and the public.
Magopeni, who was already a member of the Council, was selected by the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) as its representative last year. She currently chairs SANEF’s Education and Training Committee. With over two decades of experience in journalism and media leadership, she has held executive roles at SABC News and the Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism.
Speaking on her appointment, Magopeni said she is committed to protecting editorial integrity and media sustainability amid rapid technological changes. She emphasized the importance of a free and responsible press in upholding democracy and ensuring public access to credible information.
Mobara expressed confidence in her successor, calling her a dedicated leader who will strengthen the Press Council’s role in defending media freedom.
Magopeni will officially assume her position in mid-February.
