Yolande Makolo, spokesperson for the Rwandan government, criticized Newzroom Africa in a tweet for its coverage of Rwanda’s military actions and its interview with former Rwanda Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General Kayumba Nyamwasa.
Makolo accused the news outlet of deleting an interview discussing the involvement of South African forces near Rwanda’s border and revisiting Nyamwasa’s past, including his role in grenade attacks in Kigali in 2010 and militia operations in eastern Congo. She stated that Rwanda had dealt with the grenade attacks and would not allow further aggression from Nyamwasa’s militia in the DRC.
In her tweet, Makolo questioned Newzroom Africa’s motives, urging the outlet to explain why South African troops were fighting in President Tshisekedi’s wars. She also criticized the South African government for sheltering Nyamwasa, calling him a “fugitive” who was fueling instability in Rwanda.

The controversy stems from an interview in which Nyamwasa discussed the ongoing conflict in the DRC and the deaths of soldiers involved in the conflict with M23 rebels. The former military chief spoke about the history of Rwanda’s involvement in the region, mentioning the complex relationships Rwanda has had with neighboring countries, including Uganda and Tanzania. He argued for dialogue to resolve the tensions in the Great Lakes region and suggested that a comprehensive approach was necessary to address the issues at hand.
