Ramaphosa Defends South Africa’s Land Reform

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed concerns over the country’s land reform policies in a tweet on February 3, 2025, clarifying that the South African government has not seized any land. He explained that the recently passed Expropriation Act is not intended for confiscation but is a legal process aligned with the Constitution, designed to ensure fair and equitable access to land for the public.

Ramaphosa pointed out that expropriation laws, such as those in South Africa and the United States, aim to balance the public’s need for land with the protection of property rights. He also expressed optimism about future discussions with the U.S. administration regarding South Africa’s land reform policies and other bilateral concerns, anticipating a mutual understanding to emerge from these talks.

The President reaffirmed that the United States remains a crucial political and trade partner for South Africa. He also clarified that, apart from the PEPFAR Aid, which supports 17% of South Africa’s HIV/AIDS program, the country does not receive other significant funding from the U.S.

South Africa is a constitutional democracy that is deeply rooted in the rule of law, justice and equality. The South African government has not confiscated any land.
