SEOUL, Dec 29 — Acting President Choi Sang-mok confronted a major crisis on Sunday, just two days into his role, after the deadliest air disaster on South Korean soil. Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 crashed into a wall at Muan International Airport, killing most of the 181 passengers and crew on board.
Choi, who assumed the presidency after a wave of political upheaval, visited the crash site and declared it a special disaster zone. He extended condolences to the victims’ families and pledged government support for recovery efforts.
The crash occurred amidst ongoing political instability. Choi, originally serving as finance minister, became acting president following the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who had temporarily replaced President Yoon Suk Yeol after his impeachment earlier this month.
Government agencies scrambled to adapt to the unexpected leadership changes, with ministries reporting directly to Choi. Press procedures and operational responsibilities remain unclear, complicating the disaster response.
Officials said Choi is leading the central disaster control team, typically headed by the prime minister, under guidelines established after previous tragedies, including the Sewol ferry sinking in 2014 and the Itaewon crowd crush in 2022.
The crash added to the challenges of a government already managing political turbulence after Yoon’s brief declaration of martial law earlier this month. Parliament impeached Yoon on charges of insurrection and abuse of power, prompting further uncertainty in leadership.
