Lesotho has introduced its first electric vehicle (EV), marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy and transport modernization efforts. The initiative, funded by the European Union under the Renewable Lesotho programme, is aimed at supporting clean energy and combating climate change.
The EV, acquired through the GET.transform and GET.invest programmes, is part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and decrease reliance on fossil fuels. The vehicle highlights the potential for innovative, eco-friendly solutions to address environmental challenges while promoting renewable energy adoption in Lesotho.
Renewable Lesotho, a collaboration between Lesotho’s Ministry of Energy and European initiatives, was launched in 2023 as part of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy. The programme seeks to expand clean energy production, improve efficiency, and build capacity within Lesotho’s energy sector. It also aims to provide equitable access to reliable energy while advancing sustainable development goals.
A charging station for the EV will be built at the Renewable Lesotho main office, with plans to make it publicly accessible in the future. The initiative is being implemented by GIZ, which manages the GET.transform and GET.invest programmes supporting Lesotho’s shift to sustainable energy solutions.
