Algiers, Algeria – The second edition of the Creative Africa Nexus Weekend (CANEX WKND 2024) successfully concluded in Algiers, Algeria. The four-day event brought together over 4,000 attendees from 81 countries, including creatives, industry leaders, and policymakers.
The event featured a diverse program of live performances, masterclasses, panel discussions, and showcases across various creative sectors like fashion, music, film, and visual arts. Key highlights included deals worth US$540 million, such as a EUR 245 million facility for New World Television and a $3 million facility for Mediwood Studios.
Afreximbank Executive Vice President Kanayo Awani praised Algeria’s commitment to the event’s success and emphasized the importance of nurturing Africa’s creative industries. She expressed gratitude for the partnerships and deals formed during the event and highlighted the potential for future growth in the sector.
Algerian officials also expressed satisfaction with the event’s outcome. Nassim Mohan Amer, Director of International Cooperation, noted that CANEX provided a platform for African creators to connect with global markets and contribute to the AfCFTA’s intra-African trade agenda. Ismail Inezarene, Director of Cultural and Artistic Promotion, commended the collaboration with Afreximbank and assured attendees of a seamless experience at the upcoming IATF 2025.
CANEX WKND 2024 also featured a Ministerial Roundtable, where African and Caribbean ministers discussed the opportunities and challenges facing the cultural and creative industries. Keynotes from African Union Commission and AfCFTA officials underscored the economic and cultural value of these industries.
The event also recognized outstanding achievements, including the CANEX Prize for Publishing, awarded to Cassava Republic Press, and the CANEX Shorts film competition, which honored three young filmmakers. Additionally, angel investors committed $350,000 to support three creative businesses.
CANEX WKND 2024 successfully showcased the potential of Africa’s creative industries and fostered collaboration among creatives, policymakers, and industry leaders. As the event concludes, the focus shifts to the upcoming IATF 2025, which is expected to further propel the growth and development of Africa’s creative economy.
